LG 55LH40 55-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Gloss Black Review

I went from a 50inch plasma by lg, to a 47″ led LCD tv by LG, to this 55″ regular lcd. Here are some notes. I would have kept the 47″ led LCD if it weren’t for two big glaring issues: not just flashlighting around the edges but serious defects in certain places (over-brightness) that were annoying in dark scenes. In addition, while it had seperate controls for anti-judder / anti-blur, the more you turned UP the anti-judder, the more the image would judder! WTF? In addition the 120z created horrible artifacts, even while just looking at wikipedia!
I ended up settling on this one. Why? It’s huge. Sure, it doesn’t have all the little gadgets, and it doesn’t have network support. That’s ok, I’m fine with that. What I DON’T understand, is why they removed the option to play videos from USB. Now it’s just jpg or mp3. Yeah, right, like I need a 55″ mp3 player or a big @ss digital picture frame. No. Ok, so I got over that. Then I started playing around the 120HZ on this set. And I THINK, I finally understand it. Here’s the deal: because this technology is still really in it’s infancy, you HAVE to accommodate IT, it doesn’t accommodate you. Case in point, this technology basically relies on you not watching any one thing on the screen in particular, but to “take it all in” so that the improvements gained by 120hz OVERALL aren’t judged by the minute but frequent errors in this still pretty undeveloped tech. If you use the “high” setting and watch regular tv, you will be amazed at how smooth fast action is and how it almost seems like it’s going at 1.5x speed. You will ALSO be frustrated when you realize the tv doesn’t get it 100% right all the time. LARGE judders not present when 120HZ is OFF will have you scratching your head from time to time. I think this was just the compromise they decided to make… as it is, with the setting on high GAMES look awesome and it definitely helps. I have it hooked up to my PC, and the difference that 120HZ over 60hz makes it a -must- for full-screen fast action games on a set this size. Movies, TV shows, etc, will look superb with it off: with 120hz on you may begin to notice all too frequent “guessed” frames that just don’t sync up with the action. Whether it’s just an underpowered chip, or needing a firmware patch, or someone to get in the service menu and do some tweaks, 120hz is not for everyone and NOT for all the time.
Other than that, what can I say? The picture is clear and great out of the box but of course for tweakers the picture options like all LG sets are phenomenal. That being said, like all the big lg’s I’ve had, it doesn’t sit completely level on it’s stand which might have you using a shim… the control isn’t back-lit which is just… retarded. It’s 2010.
I got this for 00, and really, it’s a pretty good deal. At 00, I would think there are better options, but, if you just want a good barebones 55″ inch lcd, this is it.

As good as everyone else rated! – Jigar H. Patel – Plano, TX United States
By now you already know almost everything about this TV from other reviewers. Having said that I did not buy this TV for sound. I have surround sound setup already and I am not using TV speakers. I am also using this TV with my HTPC. If you are using this TV with PC then here are couple of tips: Turn off “overscan” on your PC’s display settings. 2. Set “scan only” aspect ration on TV. BTW I was able to score this TV for 00 on Nov 30, 2009.
lg wont post my review – mike –
LG wont post my review of my TV on their site so I’m posting it here: Amazon has always been good to me ! thanx guys !
After looking at LCD TV’s for a couple of years I had my choices down to either a Samsung or an LG.
I decided to purchase the LG 55LH40 which became an uphill climb right from the start.
After taking the first set back because of so many problems with artifacts (juddering) and ghosting when using the 120 Hz feature (tru-motion) no matter what I tried doing to correct it I couldn’t, the second TV was a lot better but still had some artifacts(juddering) and ghosting (mainly ghosting) when watching the same material as I did with the first TV set.
I called customer support and it was like talking to a stone wall the guy was just telling me to turn off the tru-motion and when I turn it off does the ghosting go away which of course it does and so does the 120 Hz. I continued to ask for a fix for the issue but he was a robot only able to answer from what he was instructed to give, which I made a comment about and he became indigent and hung up on me.
I have worked on the set for awhile now and with all the individual settings and the ability to tweak those settings I finally got a beautiful picture with my satellite, blu ray, and even my DVD’s, everything looks great and would be perfect if the tru-motion would work a little better.
I do wish they would address this issue with the tru-motion/video noise circuitry problem.
I have some commercial experience with LCD TVs in my job and understand they do have the means of helping to resolve this issue or at least able to tailor it so it’s not as troublesome (low key).
I know this probably won’t help out a lot, but I purchased a very expensive HDMI cable which not only helped to have a better picture it helped to a smaller degree with the ghosting.
Over all I’m very happy with the purchase now and if I had it to do all over again I would stick with the same set.
LG really needs to work on their customer relations skills and come up with a better plan for dealing with the tru-motion issue other then apologizing for the trouble I’m having and stating it’s all better when you turn it off, what’s the point in having the tru-motion if it’s always off?
Bought it elsewhere but you still need to know about it – M. G. Samuelsen – Syracuse, NY
I bought this TV last week after much deliberation and worry about the technical aspects. Contrast Ratio, 120Hz vs 240Hz, 3 vs 4 HDMI ports, I was looking for the best bang for my buck and found it in this TV. I paid 99.00 at a local appliance store and since Amazon now charges NYS tax there was no real deal to be had online. Also purchased with this was a Five Year warranty for 9.00 almost 0 less than the three year plans the big appliance stores and Amazon is offering. Considering that the company servicing all of these warranties is the same this was a no brainer. At 55 inches it is a huge screen, just barely fitting over my fireplace mantle, but the picture it delivers is fantastic. Plugged in the HDMI Out on my FIOS cable box and into the port on the back of the TV and TA DA, beautious 720p HD picture. Out of the box settings were a breeze to tweek with the easy to use remote. And while professional tuning will get you the “best picture” possible, you don’t need to be a “GeeK” to get a picture you are extremely happy with.
The sound is what it is… tv sound. Not tinny like some of the thinner tv’s so surround sound is not instantaneously necessary. It’s 4 inches thick, and while you can’t pack much speaker in that kind of size, the back facing invisible speaker is more than adequate insomuch that it is not necessary to change the volume up and down on DVDs being played to adequately hear dialogue over the background noise and music.
Out of the box the TV comes with the stand attached and fits just fine on the standard TV stand that my old 36 CRT TV was on. This TV though, is not light. At nearly 100lbs it takes two able bodied people to lift it and mount it onto a wall mount. 400 x 400 VESA standard mounting holes on a flat back make buying a mount rather easy and once it’s there, all I can say is WOW. This has been one of the best Electronic purchases I’ve ever made.

Nice tv, Cheap price tag – Yolanda Guillermo –
This tv is great for it’s price. I got this during the thanksgiving holiday sales for only 799! Picture quality is really good and the xbox games look awsome in hd. I bought a blu ray player for this tv and the quality is amazing for it’s cheap price tag. I recommend this tv to anyone who is on a tight budget.
Best HD TV for the Price; period. – Omar – Flroida
I’ll keep it simple and short: I worked as a manager for an electronics giant for a while and I’ve seen and compared many screens… No other panel in my opinion comes close to Samsung (and the similar models, like the 550 or 600) when it comes to quality/price ratio. If you’re looking for 37 to 40 inch. there is NOTHING better than this in the market other than the elite units (non priced below 3k, so don’t be fooled).

Samsung LN40A330 40-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review
![]()
We were woefully unprepared for how crappy normal TV would look. That’s a compliment to this excellent TV (and HD in general) but it meant we had to scrap our digital cable and get DirecTV. We also didn’t have the right cables to hook up all our stuff. But all that’s our fault. We just got the thing because my 10-year-old 32″ block was kind of an embarrassment. This was one of the better prices for a name brand HDTV, though it was more than we needed to spend. I think it was worth it, though, because we have no complaints about the color, picture quality, or features. It was easy to figure out once it was hooked-up. And the design is clean and not as gaudy as some others. I’d highly recommend it if you’re ready to make the jump to HD. Just be ready for the surprise, and to shell out some more dough for new cable and new cables.

Great Quality, or so I thought…. – W. Guan – AZ, USA
Bought this one for my parents for X-mas 2008 since they don’t have an HDTV. They don’t watch too much TV since they work constantly. They might use it about 15-20 hours a week. So the TV has been great for them until just after 1 year and 2 months later the internal Power Supply Unit died. Don’t you just love warranties!?
If it wasn’t for the breakdown I’d rate it an overall 4 star as the TV itself produce some good visuals although not as great as my Toshiba 1080P LCD….maybe I should of got my parents the same since mine is now over 3 years old and I use this thing constantly for gaming, movies, and even as a PC monitor via DVI to HDMI cable.
TV good, delivery service bad – Jacqueline Stack –
This TV is very nice: good picture, easy setup. The delivery was very poor. It was much more challenging to arrange a delivery time as the delivery company was pretty dense. The TV was delivered on a large pallet and the delivery person refused to even remove the box from the pallet for my wife so that the TV could be moved indoors. I definitely would question using this vendor again due to their poor choice in delivery companies.
Best deal…Fo real! – Robert Rucker Hill – Big D, Tejjas
Yes…I did my due diligence… I scanned the web, hit the stores and this was the true ‘Best Buy’ out there. I needed a TV that was better than the one that did not work and I was not looking for the latest and greatest to “one up” my friends.
What I was looking for was a good working TV that would last longer than it would take for me to pay it off…Which pans down to mean low cost and a strong reputation for manufacturing solid TV’s…and this one hit the target dead-on. I got the best price on Amazon.com from the warehouse. Go ahead and search for yourself. You’ll be right back.

Toshiba’s G300U Series HDTV with 1080p high-def resolution and 120Hz ClearFrame capability for eliminating motion blur (see larger image). |
The attractive front panel gradation of Toshiba’s Horizon design (see larger image). |
ClearFrame 120 doubles the frame rate of standard LCD TV, providing crisp and clear imagery regardless of image motion. |
It provides a number of convenient home entertainment options and key picture quality features, including DynaLight dynamic backlight control for deeper black levels and four HDMI digital inputs for simple high quality connection to cable/satellite boxes, DVD players and more. Plus, the HDMI ports feature fast InstaPort switching for quick changes from one source to another.
With the Gaming Mode function, you’ll experience reduced game control delay and improved reaction time–perfect for PC gaming–and the Photo Frame capability with Auto Slide Show enables you to display slideshows of your favorite images when not watching TV programming.
Boasting a slimming tapered bezel and attractive front panel gradation, the new Horizon design creates a more modern, elegant appearance that also adds a subtle luminance to the logo to further its stylish appeal. Other features include MP3 playback via the integrated USB port, a PC input, and a removable stand.
Key Features
- 1080p HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels)
- ClearFrame 120Hz screen refresh rate virtually eliminates motion blur, making this HDTV a great choice for fast action movies and sports. Toshiba’s ClearFrame 120Hz system doubles the frame rate of an LCD TV from 60 frames per second to 120 frames per second using superior Motion Vector Frame Interpolation technology.
- DynaLight Backlight Control utilizes advanced image processing to monitor the brightness of each video frame, and adjust the backlight intensity accordingly. This precision creates seamless transitions with deep blacks for increased detail and depth analysis.
- Photo Frame capability allows this HDTV to act as both a TV and a digital photo frame. You can showcase your favorite memories as a clear, crisp slide show on the high-resolution television screen–all controlled with just the TV remote.
- Gaming Mode takes the gaming experience to a new level by reducing game control delay, thus giving the player improved reaction time and a more realistic playing experience. This is great when used with popular gaming consoles, or with PC games using the TVs PC Input.
- Built-in ATSC/NTSC/QAM digital tuning allows for tuning of standard cable channels as well as off-air digital broadcasts, in addition to digital “cable-in-the-clear” broadcasts.
- Native Mode restores the size of the picture by the 3-5 percent that is generally lost during the normal over-scanning that occurs on traditional sets.
- Cinema Mode 24 fps (3:2 Pulldown): This HDTV performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too–a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.
- Color Temperature Control enables you to adjust white balance to achieve the best television picture possible in any viewing environment, or simply adjust the picture to suit your personal tastes. The “Warm” setting delivers a redder image that is ideal for display in a dimly lit room, while “Medium” and “Cool” provide a progressively bluer image for the best picture as room light levels are increased.
- Three TheaterWide modes are ideal for displaying HDTV signals as well as enhanced for widescreen television DVDs.
- TheaterWide 1: Letterboxed image is digitally expanded 33 percent horizontally and vertically. Useful for reproducing Academy Standard (1.85:1) formatted software.
- TheaterWide 2: Letterboxed image is expanded 33 percent horizontally and 42 percent vertically. Particularly of use when viewing narrow letterboxed images originally filmed in Panavision or CinemaScope.
- TheaterWide 3: Letterboxed image is expanded 33 percent horizontally and 24 percent vertically. Can be utilized when displaying letterboxed images that incorporate narrow bands at the top and bottom of the picture.
- MP3 audio and JPEG image playback via USB port on the side.
- REGZA-LINK (HDMI-CEC) allows peripheral AV devices such as a DVD player to be controlled by the remote control.
- InstaPort fast HDMI switching between A/V components: Typically, when you switch HDMI inputs, there can be a five or six second delay. With InstaPort, as soon as you select an HDMI source, it will connect in a fraction of the time.
- Ethernet port for connecting to wired home network.
- Bottom-mounted invisible speakers integrated into stylish Horizon bezel design (20 Watts total power; 10W + 10W).
- Channel Browser allows you to easily scan through the last 32 channels you have viewed, with screen images for the last five channels displayed, by channel, by favorites, and by input, at the touch of a button.
- Channel Labeling allows you to put station call letters on the screen along with the station numbers, so you always know what channel you’re watching
- Input labeling enables you to name the individual inputs to denote usage, such as “DVD Player” (instead of having them display as just “HDMI 1″ and “HDMI 2″).
- Removable stand for wall mounting (200mm x 200mm VESA mounting pattern)
- Tri-lingual onscreen menu (English, French, Spanish)
- Warranty: 1-year limited warranty on parts and labor

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.
If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.
- Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
- Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Samsung LN40B530 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

This TV is just awesome and I love every aspect of it.
First of all, the exterior design is dark, sleek and really attractive, it mainly continues with the line of Samsung designs we’ve grown to love.
The TV isn’t heavy at all so it’s easy to move around and set up, be it the normal stand or the wall mount.
The image will blow your mind. It’s just as awesome as it comes. The 60,000:1 aspect ratio gives a pretty nice black-to-white transference and the brightness is really good too. The colors are really vivid and really make the images stand out.
I have an xbox360 and a PS3 hooked up to it and the gaming experience is just mind blowing. The blu-rays on this thing are just breath-taking, the image is really sharp and clear and brightness and color depth will really amaze you.
Many people have critisized the built-in speakers, but I think the sound is really good and clear. I also have it hooked to a 5.1 home theater system, but the built-in sound is not bad at all.
The price is excellent IMO, I paid U5.00 and it arrived in perfect conditions.
Overall I think this item is a great buy. An excellent TV for a very good price. Highly recommended.

Smokin’ – literally! – Family of 4 – New Jersey, USA
TV was purchased less than 6 months ago. Was a “secondary” TV and was probably used a total of less than 50-75 hours. Yesterday morning started smelling a nasty electrical fire kind of a smell. TV was still working while I ran around trying to figure out where the smell was originating. In those few minutes the whole house got filled with this nasty smoke. Figured out it was the TV and unplugged it. Plugged the TV in again just to check in the evening. Great sound, no picture, still stinks. Anybody need a stinky 40′ flat screen RADIO?
Matte Screen is Key – Meathead 71 – Chicago Suburbs
I also have a Samsung 58PN560 to compare to, so…..
The color is great out of the box, whereas i fiddled with the plasma a lot more.
The matte screen does a great job of limiting reflections in a sunny room with a big picture window. I don’t know if they make many models any more with a matte screen, but I would highly recommend it.
Watched half of the superbowl on the TV and noticed no streaking or blurring of motion of any kind.
Only thing I can’t seem to find on this TV is how to set the time – not sure if it is a feature or not. Don’t really need the instructions to get up and running.
Sound is better than on last tv…36″ Toshiba – picture tube and all…probably 175 lbs.
quite happy with tv so far – T. Dean – MD, United States
had this tv for about a month now. we don’t have cable so it is mainly used for watching movies and playing video games. i am very happy with the colors and the picture is tight. movies and 360 games look great on it. i would buy this tv again, samsung almost always makes a quality product. also, product was delivered via pilot freight services. this was my first experience with them and i read mixed reviews. i had no problems with the delivery. the delivery truck arrived when they said it would and they called about a half hour before arrival to make sure i was home.
